New Year's Eve Celebration: Crews begin final preparations for crystal ball set to drop in Times Square next week

In New York City, preparations are being made for the celebration of the New Year in Times Square. Workers are putting the final details on the iconic Times Square Ball and other decorations that will light up the Crossroads of the World for the arrival of 2025.

Roughly 1 million people will pack themselves into Times Square on New Year’s Eve, and officials want to ensure they have a fun and safe celebration.

The famous Times Square Ball, consisting of 2,700 crystals and weighing about six tons, will be used for the last time this year. After 2025, it will be replaced with a new ball to symbolize the coming of 2026.

Michael Phillips, the president of Jamestown, a real estate company that owns One Times Square, the building from which the ball drops, highlighted the significance of the ball as a symbol in the lives of many. He announced that the current ball, in use since 2008 and the fifth in the tradition that started in 1908, will be preserved and displayed at the Times Travel Museum in One Times Square for public viewing all year round.

Among those on hand on Friday to celebrate the ball was the singer Pitbull, who described the experience of being there as “surreal.”

“Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2025” will air live on ABC on Tuesday, Dec. 31, beginning at 8 p.m. EST and stream next day on Hulu.
