A 15-year-old white teenager from Massachusetts has acknowledged involvement in a racially motivated incident last year where he attempted to drown a Black teenager while using racial slurs and making reference to the victim as “George Floyd” due to his difficulty in breathing.

Recently, John P. Sheeran entered a plea of guilty to attempted murder and assault with a dangerous weapon, as per the Cape Cod Times. Sheeran is categorized as a “youthful offender,” giving the Barnstable Juvenile Court Judge Sylvia Gomes the discretion to potentially sentence him as an adult.

According to Massachusetts’ youthful offender statute, prosecutors have the option to pursue adult penalties for juveniles aged 14 to 17 in specific situations. These scenarios involve the juvenile being accused of a felony and causing or threatening severe bodily harm, engaging in a firearms offense, or having a history of being committed to the Department of Youth Services.
