New York police have arrested a mother who abandoned her newborn baby girl outside a Bronx home Sunday morning.
Delfina Galvez has been charged with reckless endangerment and abandonment of a child, WABC reported. She is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.
Police said Galvez lives near where she left the infant.
The baby was discovered wrapped in blankets in a tote bag, according to WCBS.
A video recording captured a woman strolling through the area, holding a green tote bag. She was observed placing the bag down multiple times before leaving the view of the camera. Upon her return, she was no longer carrying the bag.
After hearing the sound of a baby crying, a resident contacted Mamadou Hafiz Jallow, who resides in the vicinity. Jallow, who is an imam, was away at his mosque nearby but promptly made his way back home to locate the crying infant.
“When I opened the blanket, I see a little baby, blinking their eyes and shaking their fingers. Very cold,” he said.
He brought the child inside and called 911. The little girl was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.
New York has a safe haven law that allows newborns to be dropped off at certain locations without criminal charges.
