A 10-year-old Florida girl died early Wednesday after she was struck in the head by “celebratory” gunfire during New Year’s celebrations.
Miami-Dade Police reported that Yanelis Munuguia, a 10-year-old girl, was outside with her family around 1:30 a.m., celebrating with legal fireworks when tragedy struck. According to WPLG, the family witnessed the little girl collapsing after sustaining a gunshot to her head.
After the incident, the family tried to rush Yanelis to the hospital, calling 911 on their way. They were eventually met by Hialeah Fire Rescue, who quickly transported her to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. Despite their efforts, the girl passed away at the hospital.
Investigators said the bullet that struck was “fired into the air from an unknown location by an unknown subject.”
Miami-Dade Police Detective Andre Martin highlighted the dangers of firing a gun into the air, emphasizing the tragic consequences that can result from celebratory gunfire. He stressed, “We say time and time again, every New Year’s, that what goes up must come down. This is a prime example of the dangers of shooting a firearm into the air.”
