ORLANDO, Fla. – As temperatures plunge this winter, keeping your home warm is essential. However, heating systems can pose safety risks and increase energy costs if not properly maintained.
We spoke with Patrick Liner, a seasoned HVAC professional, to share key advice on staying safe, warm and efficient during the cold months.
Schedule a maintenance check
Before winter sets in, schedule a professional inspection for your furnace or boiler. According to Patrick Liner, this step can prevent costly breakdowns and ensure your system runs efficiently.
“A thorough maintenance check includes cleaning components, checking for wear and tear, and testing the system for optimal performance,” Liner explained.
Change your air filter regularly
Clogged air filters are a common culprit for inefficient heating systems. A dirty filter forces your system to work harder, driving up energy costs and potentially leading to breakdowns. Replace your filter every 1-3 months to keep the air flowing and your heating system in top shape.
Watch for warning signs
Is your system making strange noises or cycling on and off too frequently? Have you noticed a sudden spike in your energy bills? These could be signs of an issue that needs immediate attention.
“Don’t wait until it’s too late,” Liner warned. “If something doesn’t seem right, call a professional right away.”
Stay safe from carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide is a serious concern during the winter months, particularly for homes using gas-powered heating systems. Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home and test them regularly.
“Never ignore the smell of gas or unusual fumes,” Liner said. “If you suspect a problem, evacuate and call for help immediately.”
Seal drafts to save money
Preventing drafts around windows and doors can make a big difference in your heating bill. Use weather-stripping or caulking to seal gaps and keep the cold air out.
“A little effort here can go a long way in keeping your home warm and reducing costs,” Liner added.
When to call a professional
If you haven’t had your heating system checked in over a year or if you’re noticing issues, it’s time to call a professional. Regular maintenance can save you money in the long run and give you peace of mind during the coldest months.
