Sunny Hostin‘s husband, Emmanuel “Manny” Hostin, has been accused of federal insurance fraud in a new lawsuit.
The orthopedic surgeon, who has been running Hostin Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine since 2006, is one of 200 defendants listed in the lawsuit. However, he is specifically accused of receiving illegal payments for surgeries and wrongfully charging the insurance company American Transit. This insurance company mainly covers Uber and Lyft drivers and taxi companies.
According to the lawsuit obtained by Entertainment Weekly, Manny is accused of knowingly providing fake medical services, including surgeries, to patients covered by the insurance. It is also claimed that he deceitfully billed American Transit for these services in exchange for undisclosed payments disguised as dividends or cash distributions.
The surgeon’s lawyer, Daniel Thwaites, stated to The Daily Mail, the first source to report the incident, that Manny refutes all allegations. The lawyer described the lawsuit as baseless, targeting the orthopedic surgeon unfairly, mentioning that the insurance company behind the lawsuit is close to bankruptcy.
“It is meant to intimidate and harass doctors from collecting for care given to American Transit insureds and their passengers,” the statement continued, per The Daily Mail. “American Transit has rushed into the lawsuit without ever conducting an examination of Dr. Hostin or expressing any concerns to his lawyers. The real story here is about an insurance carrier abusing the legal system to limit and restrict health care benefits to its insureds and their passengers, and write off its proper obligations.”
DECIDER has reached out to Sunny’s reps for comment, but did not hear back by the time of publication.
Sunny, who is a former prosecutor and current co-host on The View, tied the knot with Manny in 1998. They share two children.
While Manny is rather low-profile, his television personality wife often brings him up on the long-running daytime talk show. Just last March, she revealed that he has no problem talking “about his feelings with his friends.”
One thing is for sure: he’s definitely going to need his friends this week!
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
