A BRITISH 12-year-old boy has tragically died after getting thrown from a car in a horror rollover crash on a motorway in Belgium.
A British car was heading towards the French border when a fatal accident happened around 1am on Wednesday.
It’s understood the boy was killed while returning with his parents from Belgium to England.
The family was coming back from a wedding in Antwerp before the deadly crash took place in Veurne (West Flanders), according to Belgian media.
The BMWX5 landed on the roof on a verge between the main road and an exit ramp in the horror crash.
The incident occurred on the E40 highway, and since there were no witnesses, law enforcement was alerted by the vehicle’s automatic emergency system.
Officials are looking into whether the rollover crash resulted from challenging weather conditions and excessive speed, as mentioned by the local prosecutor’s office.
In a statement, cops said: “There were a total of six occupants in the car.
“One of them, a 12-year-old boy with British nationality, was thrown out of the vehicle and died of his injuries.”
Emergency services were able to resuscitate the boy, who was one of four in the car, at the scene.
He was then transferred to a nearby hospital where he tragically died.
Four members of the family suffered minor injuries.
A fifth suffered more serious injuries but was said to not be in a life-threatening condition.
All members of the family were transferred to hospital for treatment.
Local authorities are yet to name the family that were involved in the tragic crash.
The prosecutor’s office said: “The first findings show that the poor weather conditions and aquaplaning on the road, in combination with an unadjusted speed, may be the causes of the accident.
“No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
“The investigation is continuing.”
Shortly after the crash occurred, a tour bus with British number plates swerved and scraped a police car that was responding to the initial accident on the hard shoulder of the E40.
There were no injuries and the damage was limited, reports claim.
