Missing Ohio Children Found in Iceland After Nearly 3 Month Search

Two children, reported missing from Ohio in October, have been found thousands of miles away — in Iceland.

The US Marshals Service, in collaboration with the Canton Police Department and the US Department of State, successfully facilitated the return of the two children, aged 8 and 9, earlier this month.

The series of events unfolded on October 25, 2024, following a report from a family member to the Canton Police regarding the disappearance of the children. The family member disclosed that the mother, aged 34, had ceased taking her prescribed mental health medication, vacated her residence, and withdrawn the children from school.

Reports from WEWS indicated that the mother had rented a vehicle which was subsequently tracked to multiple locations across the United States. The tracking revealed activity such as the mother’s cell phone signal in Syracuse, New York, usage of a bank card in Oregon, and a phone call originating from New Hampshire.

Marshals said they tracked the family to Denver, Colorado. But they hadn’t stayed there for long, and investigators soon learned they’d gone first to London and then to the island of Jersey in the English Channel.

From Jersey, they traveled to a remote fishing village in Iceland before Icelandic Police found them at a hotel in Reykjavik.

“The children were placed in the care of Iceland social services until a trusted family member could get them,” the marshals service said. “The mother was placed in a hospital where she will remain until she is well enough to travel back to the U.S.”

It’s not clear if she will face charges when she is returned.
