Tennessee police have identified the student who carried out Wednesday’s shooting that killed a girl and left another classmate injured.
Josselin Escalante, 16, has been identified as the victim by Metro Nashville police, with the shooter being Solomon Henderson, 17. According to WSMV, Henderson shot Escalante and another student in the cafeteria of Antioch High School before taking his own life.
On social media, a photo has been circulating that appears to show Henderson holding a small handgun, with another image showing the gun partially visible in a backpack. The authenticity of these photos has not been confirmed by law enforcement.
Authorities stated that Henderson was observed confronting a 16-year-old student in the cafeteria before opening fire, resulting in the injury of Escalante. It remains unclear if Escalante was connected to the initial confrontation.
A 17-year-old who was grazed by a bullet during Wednesday’s incident has been released from the hospital, according to reports.
A motive is unclear.
“As to a motive, we’re looking into that,” police Chief John Drake said, per The Tennessean. “There are some materials on the internet that we’re looking at that’s under the investigation.”
Metro Nashville Public Schools said the high school will remain closed for the rest of the week.
