Returning to his familiar Washington, D.C. setting, Bradley Whitford, a seasoned actor from The West Wing, will be gracing the cast of The Diplomat for its highly anticipated third season, as per reports from Deadline.
His new role in the Netflix political drama will see him in a recurring capacity, portraying the husband of Vice President Grace Penn, a character brought to life by his former West Wing co-star, Allison Janney.
SPOILER AHEAD!
Season 2’s finale saw Vice President Grace Penn unexpectedly assuming the presidency due to the tragic passing of President William Rayburn (played by Michael McKean), leading Whitford’s character to step into the shoes of the First Gentleman.
Fans of The West Wing will undoubtedly be excited to see Janney and Whitford reunite onscreen. During the iconic NBC series’ seven-season run, Janney brought the sharp-witted Press Secretary C.J. Cregg to life, while Whitford played the determined Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman.
Whitford’s impressive career has earned him three Emmy Awards—one for his performance on The West Wing and two more for his work on Transparent and The Handmaid’s Tale. His extensive TV credits also include Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Valley of the Boom, and the recent thriller The Madness.
On the big screen, Whitford has appeared in critically acclaimed films such as Get Out, Tick, Tick… Boom!, and Saving Mr. Banks. He is represented by Gersh, Greenlight Management, and Peikoff Mahan.
Production for The Diplomat Season 3 is currently underway, following the series’ early renewal ahead of its Season 2 premiere.
Keri Russell leads the cast, joined by Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh. Deborah Cahn, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer, created the show alongside Keri Russell, Janice Williams, and Alex Graves.
