A man allegedly caught hitting and strangling a woman was shot by a Nevada off-duty police officer and his wife.
An incident in the 700 block of 6th Street in Boulder City, Nevada caught the attention of the LVMPD on Friday morning as they received a distressing call about a person found deceased in a front yard.
Responding to the call, an off-duty officer witnessed a disturbing scene – a man was aggressively assaulting a woman by punching and strangling her from a neighboring yard. Reacting swiftly, the officer intervened to assist the woman and asked his wife to contact the authorities before he took action.
LVMPD Capt. Kurt McKenzie recounted the event stating, “The off-duty officer went outside and observed a male mounted on top of a female, punching and strangling her at the same time.” The officer’s quick response potentially saved the woman from further harm in this alarming situation.
The officer was able to help the woman escape from her assailant safely. However, the assailant then followed the officer into his yard. The officer issued “numerous” warnings to the trespassing assailant, stating that he would shoot if the man did not stop. The man continued to advance, prompting the officer and his wife to fire their weapons.
“We heard four gunshots—boom, boom, boom, boom—and we turned around to see a guy standing outside with his hands up, everything like a gun in his hand,” said Boulder City High School student Colin Weyrauch, who heard the commotion, according to 3 News.
The man who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither of the shooters sustained any injuries.
The Las Vegas Metro Police Department is handling the investigation and is treating this incident as an officer-involved shooting.
