Dog in shelter for 7 years gets fresh start and new hope at Lake Humane Society: Ready Pet GO!

Rescued back in 2018, an abandoned and neglected dog won the hearts of shelter staff. But she’s still looking for her own family to love.

MENTOR, Ohio — For seven long years, a sweet and gentle dog named Baby has waited for someone to give her a forever home.

She was found abandoned and chained outdoors by Mahoning County Humane Officers back in 2018.

Since then, Baby has been receiving love and care from the staff and volunteers at Animal Charity of Ohio in Youngstown. However, despite this, she was surprisingly not chosen by any potential adopters.

Responding to Baby’s situation, the team at Lake Humane Society in Mentor stepped in to rescue her and give her a fresh opportunity to find a forever home in Lake County.

Instances like Baby’s transfer are quite common in the field of animal welfare. Shelters often work together when a resident has been waiting a long time for adoption. A change of scenery and exposure to a new pool of potential adopters can sometimes greatly improve the chances of finding a forever home.

“Everyone knows her story,” said Patience Doeing, Intake and Foster Coordinator at Lake Humane Society. “We’ve been talking about it for a long time.”

Baby quickly became a favorite at her new shelter, just as she was at her original one.

“Everyone that she’s met here just loves her,” Doeing added. “When she arrived, everyone was like, ‘Let me come see Baby!’”

Believed to be about 9 years old, Baby shows no signs of slowing down. Her caretakers describe her as a gentle, affectionate dog with a tail that never stops wagging. She loves cuddling, car rides, playing with stuffed animals and eagerly shows off commands for a tasty treat.

Her charming personality was on full display during a recent overnight stay with a Lake Humane Society volunteer.

“She even kept checking on her and was like, 7 a.m. is she awake? 8 a.m. is she awake?” the volunteer shared. “She got up, went outside, hung around. She was doing zoomies in the house. She loved it on the couch and dog beds. She acted like she’d always been there.”

A little gray around the muzzle but full of life, Baby is ready for her next chapter. Shelter staff are hopeful that this fresh start will finally end her seven-year wait for a forever home.

Staff believe she’d do well in a home children 12 and over. She would need a meet-and-greet with other dogs, but is untested with cats. Cuddles, walks and a few stuffed toys would provide the perfect home for her.

Baby has been fully vetted and undergone a behavioral assessment.

Now, they are hoping that Baby will capture the heart of her forever family. With her sweet nature, playful spirit and perpetual tail wag, she’s sure to bring joy to the right home.

Let’s help Baby find the loving family she’s been waiting for all these years.
