Australian Idol star Courtney Murphy shares devastating health update amid bowel cancer battle

Courtney Murphy has provided a health update amid his battle with bowel cancer.

The former Australian Idol favourite says that he is still fighting the disease as a year approaches since he was first diagnosed.

‘It’s nearly a year on now from my diagnosis and there’s no end in sight as far as treatment goes,’ the 45-year-old told Perth Now.

‘I’ve told my doctors to throw everything they’ve got at it,’ he added.

Courtney and his band of siblings, The Murphy Brothers, have released their new album, Something In The Water, which they dedicated to their late father.

‘I’m willing to do whatever it takes, I’m going to keep looking forward to putting out the next album,’ he said.

Late last year, Courtney took the brave step to return to performing and recording after being diagnosed with late-stage bowel cancer.

Courtney, who rose to fame on the singing competition in 2004, revealed he was battling the cruel disease last April.

After undergoing surgery and chemotherapy Courtney delighted his fans earlier this month with a show in Freemantle, WA.

‘With all the love and support we’ve received these past few months, it’s great to be able to share some new music,’ brother Chris told Perth Now.

‘Courtney’s really proud of this album, we all are. It was a lot of fun to put together, and Courtney turned in a phenomenal performance. Of course, he steals the show.’

The beloved singer’s brothers Kieran and Chris shared the devastating news of Courtney’s cancer battle via a GoFundMe page launch last April.

‘Our beautiful brother Courtney Murphy is in for the fight of his life,’ began his family on the fundraising page.

‘It is with heavy hearts that we share Court has been diagnosed with advanced stage bowel cancer. It’s very serious.

‘Many of you will know Courtney for his amazing musical talent and his big voice,’ continued the heart-wrenching statement.

‘We think it’s fair to say he’s been entertaining West Aussies for the best part of 30 years – either as a wide eyed kid on Australian Idol, on stage in We Will Rock You, or just gigging with us – his brothers – in Murphy’s Lore and The Murphy Brothers.

‘As a self-employed musician with a wife and three young children, Courtney will not be able to work for the foreseeable future which leaves his young family fighting much harder than we want them to be.

‘Anyone who knows Courtney knows that his heart is as a big as his voice and we’ve set up this GoFundMe page in the hope that we can ease some of the burden on his young family.

‘Any funds generated will go directly to Courtney Murphy, his wife Jane and children as they navigate the difficult road ahead,’ it concluded.

As of January this year, Courtney’s GoFundMe has raised $140,175.

The shock news follows the Murphy family losing their father to brain cancer last year.

‘We lost our Dad in January to a brain tumour. Now Court is fighting for his own life,’ brother Chris said.

The Perth-based singer has been married to wife Jane Price since 2005 and the pair have three young children – two sons and a daughter.

Murphy rose to fame on Australian Idol in 2004 and has been steadily working ever since, landing a role in the Queen musical We Will Rock You in 2018.

Courtney released a solo studio album in 2010 called Big.

He’s also released two album with The Murphy Brothers, Thick as Thieves in 2013 and Fall On Me in 2021.
