Get your wooden stakes ready, slayers. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting a reboot!
Variety reports that the teen fantasy series is nearing a pilot order over at Hulu.
The beloved series aired on The WB between 1997 and 2003 and drew inspiration from Joss Whedon’s 1992 movie that starred Kristy Swanson. Sarah Michelle Gellar played the role of Buffy Summers, a high school student tasked with battling the dark forces that haunted Sunnydale High. Alongside her mentor Giles and a close-knit group of friends, she took on the responsibility of being a teenage vampire slayer.
However, the upcoming series appears to be taking a different path from the original. A fresh creative team, excluding Whedon due to allegations of misogyny surfaced in a shocking 2022 article by New York Magazine, is now onboard. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, known for their work on Poker Face and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, will handle the writing, showrunning, and executive production. The pilot will be directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhao from Eternals, who will also serve as an executive producer. Dolly Parton, the original series’ producer, is set to make a return as well.
Deadline also reports that the writers room is expected to begin soon, which could be a good sign that the show is getting a series order.
Hulu has a track record of reviving beloved teen dramas, having also successfully brought back Veronica Mars. However, the reboot of that show ended on a highly controversial note, leaving fans divided in their opinions.
Now that we know the beloved series is getting a reboot, many fans may be wondering: Is the Scooby gang getting back together? Here’s what we know so far.
Variety reports Gellar is in final talks to reprise her iconic role. But it appears Gellar will only appear in a recurring capacity rather than helm the series. The series will reportedly feature a new slayer, which sounds like Buffy will be offering some much-needed mentorship to the new young hero. She will also serve as an executive producer on the series.
Members of the original cast (which included Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, James Marsters, Anthony Head, David Boreanaz, Charisma Carpenter and Seth Green) have not yet publicly addressed the news.
For now, it remains unclear if the rest of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast plans on signing on for the reboot. But Deadline notes the possibility “is considered likely.”
For those looking to catch up on the series, now is the perfect time! The hit series was on the air for seven seasons, making it the perfect binge watch.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is now streaming on Hulu for free. The series is also available for rent or purchase on Prime Video.
