CHICAGO (WLS) — Icy conditions on Chicago area roads have led to several crashes late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.
The crashes comes as a winter storm brought freezing rain to the area, with a small amount of ice accumulating on untreated surfaces.

On Wednesday night and Thursday morning, there were multiple accidents that the Illinois State Police had to attend to. These incidents included cars spinning out and sliding off the road on the Edens Expressway close to Tower Road.

Due to the icy conditions, the westbound lanes on I-88 have been closed between mile markers 91 and 81 in the DeKalb region. This closure was put in place around 9:22 p.m. following numerous accidents. However, the eastbound lanes are still accessible to traffic.
As temperatures rise to around 40 degrees on Thursday, any ice or sleet that has accumulated will likely melt away throughout the day. Furthermore, there is a possibility of another storm system arriving on Saturday, which could result in a mix of wintry weather across much of the area.
The Illinois Tollway and IDOT are warning drivers to be especially careful on bridges, overpasses, and on and off ramps, which are some of the most ice-prone areas.
