Orphaned Children’s Estate Lawyer Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Over $540,000

A lawyer serving as the executor of orphaned children’s estate has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $540,000 from their funds.

Karen Kay Hogan, 67, was arrested and charged with a crime in Boerne, Texas, on January 30. She is accused of using money meant for six children who lost their parents in a tragic incident in 2021.

The incident occurred on December 31, 2021, when Jason Evans, 47, fatally shot his wife, Emily Fulton Evans, before taking his own life at their residence on Ridge Place in Boerne. The couple left behind six children, consisting of five daughters and one son, as per the Boerne Star.

In November 2022, Hogan was named the interim manager of the Evans estate and later assumed the role of the managing administrator, according to KSAT.

In 2023, Hogan began transferring funds from savings accounts set up in the parents’ names, where she listed herself as the joint account owner, into her business account. From there, transfers were made to an unknown account.

According to the affidavit, between August 2023 and February 2024, Hogan misapplied $541,550 from the estate.

Hogan has surrendered her law license, as indicated by Texas State Bar records. She is facing felony charges of misapplication of fiduciary property of $300,000 or more, exploitation of children, and exploitation of a disabled individual.
