Recently, a former employee of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) was given a prison sentence for participating in a scheme where she and two others stole checks valued at more than $24 million. The Department of Justice provided this information.
U.S. Attorney Dena J. King made the announcement about the sentencing on Feb. 7 for Nakedra Shannon, 30, and Desiray Carter, 30, both residents of Charlotte. Shannon received a 60-month prison term, while Carter was sentenced to 54 months for their involvement in the criminal activity.
According to authorities, Shannon worked at a USPS distribution center in Charlotte as a mail processing clerk from March 2021 to July 2023. During this period, she stole checks that were coming in and going out of the facility.
According to the press release, Shannon admitted to stealing the checks on the job from April to July 2023. Her co-conspirators included Carter and Donell Gardner, who was sentenced to 54 months in prison and three years of supervised release in 2023.

The U.S. Attorney’s office noted that the defendants pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit financial institution fraud and theft of government property. They were ordered to pay $113,333.87 in restitution, both jointly and separately.Â

“In making today’s announcement, U.S. Attorney King thanked U.S. Postal Service’s Office of the Inspector General, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, IRS-Criminal Investigation, the U.S. Department of Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service, and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department for their investigation of the case,” the press release concluded.Â
