New Delhi, India stampede: At least 15 people killed in New Delhi railway station stampede, Indian official says

NEW DELHI — At least 15 people were killed in a stampede at a railway station in India’s capital of New Delhi, an official said Sunday, local time.

Atishi, Delhi’s caretaker chief minister who goes by a single name, mentioned that the deceased were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital in the capital.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday night at the New Delhi railway station when a large crowd was present, awaiting a train to travel to the location of the Maha Kumbh Hindu festival in northern India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was “distressed by the stampede.”

Expressing solidarity, Atishi stated, “My heart goes out to those who have lost their dear ones. I hope for a swift recovery for the injured. Authorities are providing support to those impacted by this unfortunate stampede,” as reported by X.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that an investigation has been ordered to find what led to the stampede.
