Hulu Officially Scraps ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ TV Series

Hulu has officially scrapped its planned TV adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses, the hit romantasy series by Sarah J. Maas.

The project, developed by Disney’s 20th Television, had been in the works at Hulu since March 2021.

Maas worked with Ronald D. Moore, the creator of Outlander, on the script for the adaptation. However, updates on the project were hard to come by. Progress hit a roadblock in 2023 due to strikes in the industry that halted most scripted productions.

By February 2024, TVLine announced that the series was no longer moving forward at Hulu and would not be pitched to other networks. Sources revealed to Variety that although the show was still technically under contract, it was not actively being developed. Disney’s 20th Television will hold the rights until late summer 2025.

Variety reported that Maas plans to shop ACOTAR to a new studio once Disney’s option expires. Neither 20th Television nor Hulu offered any comments, and Maas’s representatives have not yet responded to inquiries from the media outlet.

The first book in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, published in May 2015, follows 19-year-old huntress Feyre Archeron. After killing a faerie wolf in the woods, she is taken to the magical realm of Prythian by Tamlin, one of the seven High Lords. As Feyre spends time at his estate in the Spring Court, she begins to uncover shocking truths about the faerie world she thought she knew.

Following the debut novel’s success, Maas released four sequels: A Court of Mist and Fury, A Court of Wings and Ruin, A Court of Frost and Starlight, and A Court of Silver Flames. A sixth installment is currently in the works, though no release date has been announced.
