Suspect shot dead after stabbing Shelby police officer in neck, police say

The Shelby Police Department said Sergeant Noah Kocher is in stable condition while the suspect, Tyler Jacobs, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

CLEVELAND — A Shelby police officer fatally shot a suspect man after the suspect stabbed the officer in the neck, police say.

Per an announcement from the Shelby Police Department, Sergeant Noah Kocher is currently stable following the incident. The accused, Tyler Jacobs, was declared deceased at a medical facility.

Around 11:18 p.m. Saturday, Kocher and another officer, Dominic Ewing, attempted to serve Jacobs a Shelby Municipal Court warrant at an Arby’s restaurant on Mansfield Avenue. Police said that after the officers made contact and told Jacobs of the warrant, the suspect stabbed Kocher with a knife.

After Kocher was able to separate himself from Jacobs, the suspect ran toward Kocher with his knife still in hand, police say. Kocher drew his weapon and fired, hitting Jacobs.

Ewing, who was covering the restaurant’s back door, “made immediate entry and provided aid to Sergeant Kocher and provided critical aid to Jacobs,” the press release stated.

Police did not immediately provide details of the extent of Kocher’s injuries.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations was called to the scene to handle the probe into the incident.

The Shelby Police Department said multiple other law enforcement agencies and first responders assisted at the scene, including the Shelby Fire Department, Richland County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio State Highway Patrol. Local police departments in Lexington, Mansfield, Ontario and Plymouth also responded.
