Mentor Monday: Empowering adult learners through leadership and guidance

Throughout each Monday in March, 3News will showcase mentors and mentees involved in College Now Greater Cleveland, starting with Marissa McDade and Kaori Evans.

3News dedicates Mondays in March to recognizing the importance of mentorship by featuring mentors and mentees from College Now Greater Cleveland. This organization not only provides financial assistance to 38,000 individuals but also matches students with mentors to support their educational journey.

Marissa McDade was introduced to her mentor, Kaori Evans, through College Now. Their relationship blossomed as they connected over their shared challenges of balancing motherhood, employment, and pursuing further education, often conversing over a comforting cup of coffee.

The mentorship has not only helped Marissa with school, but also provided support for personal struggles.

“I was able to be vulnerable with her and get advice not just about school, but work and the kids too,” Marissa says.

For Evans, being a mentor is about more than offering guidance. It’s a chance to give back and learn from others.

“You gain something from it too. I really cherish this relationship with Marissa,” she reflected.

College Now aims to make college more attainable for all students. With the right mentorship and financial aid counseling, students like Marissa are finding their paths to success.

Becoming a mentor is minimal commitment — just two emails per month and three meetings a year. But the impact can be profound, not just for the mentees but for the mentors as well.

For Marissa, balancing school, motherhood, and running her own business is a challenge she embraces. She hopes her journey will inspire her children, especially her daughter.

“I’m showing my daughter that no matter what obstacles I face, I can still accomplish my goals,” she said.
