When Drew Barrymore attended the 25th anniversary celebration of “Saturday Night Live”, she had a clear goal in mind: to convince Bill Murray to star in “Charlie’s Angels.”
The actress welcomed her former co-star to The Drew Barrymore Show today, where she remembered going to the event 25 years ago.
Barrymore recalled her mission at the event, stating, “I remember specifically going to the 25th anniversary with only one mission – and it was to find you.” She expressed her excitement when Murray acknowledged her during his performance, indicating, “He knows I’m here.”
She revealed her intention of seeking out Murray to ask him to join the cast of “Charlie’s Angels,” highlighting the unique way she could get in touch with him by using a payphone, which she found very cool.
Murray then added, “Well, people had coins back then,” to which Barrymore replied, “You acknowledged me and it worked and I was so excited.”
The Saturday Night Live alum — who ended up playing John Bosley in the iconic spy film — infamously clashed with actress Lucy Liu on set.
Liu confirmed reports that Murray had started “hurl insults” at her during a rehearsal after learning a scene had been reworked without his knowledge, noting that his language was “inexcusable and unacceptable.”
“I was, like, ‘Wow, he seems like he’s looking straight at me.’ I couldn’t believe that [his comments] could be towards me, because what do I have to do with anything majorly important at that time?” she said on the Asian Enough podcast in 2021, per Deadline. “I say, ‘I’m so sorry. Are you talking to me? And clearly he was, because then it started to become a one-on-one communication.”
The star recently told The Guardian that she didn’t regret standing up for herself. “I would’ve done that in any situation. I think when I sense something is not right, I am going to protect myself. It’s an innate thing to do if you feel there’s injustice, and I always feel that way,” she said.
