Trump accuses 'Governor' Trudeau of using tariffs drama to 'stay in power' in explosive call

Donald Trump tore into ‘Governor’ Justin Trudeau of Canada after an explosive call on Wednesday between the leaders as the tariff war escalates.

The pair spoke one day after Trudeau described Trump’s 25 percent tariffs on U.S. imports into his country as ‘dumb’ in a blistering response.

‘Justin Trudeau, of Canada, called me to ask what could be done about Tariffs. I told him that many people have died from Fentanyl that came through the Borders of Canada and Mexico, and nothing has convinced me that it has stopped,’ Trump wrote on Truth Social.

‘He said that it’s gotten better, but I said, “That’s not good enough.”‘ he went on.

Trump said the call ended in a ‘somewhat’ friendly manner but blamed the Canadian prime minister of using the tariffs tussle to ‘stay in power.’

‘He was unable to tell me when the Canadian Election is taking place, which made me curious, like, what’s going on here? I then realized he is trying to use this issue to stay in power. Good luck Justin!’

Trump went on to add that Trudeau’s policies were ‘responsible for the death of many people’ due to fentanyl.

The pair spoke after Trudeau launched a tough response to Trump’s decision to level punishing tariffs on his country.

Looking directly into a TV camera and addressing ‘Donald,’ on Tuesday he said: ‘Even though you are a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do.’

Trudeau, at times close to tears during an emotional press conference in Ottawa, was quoting a previous verdict on Trump’s tariff policy delivered by the Wall Street Journal.

U.S. Imports from Canada will now be taxed at 25 percent as Trump’s tariffs went into effect on Tuesday.

In retaliation, Trudeau announced that Canada would begin implementing 25 percent tariffs on $155 billion of American goods, starting with $30 billion worth immediately.

Trudeau said: ‘Today the United States launched a trade war against Canada, their closest partner and ally, and their closest friend. At the same time they’re talking about working positively with Russia, appeasing Vladimir Putin a lying murderous dictator. Make that make sense.’

The United States imported $412 billion worth of goods from Canada in 2024, according to the US Census Bureau. Canada is America’s third largest trading partner.

Trudeau veered between anger, frustration, defiance and sadness during his extended press conference.

‘We’re insulted, we’re angry, but we’re Canadian, which means we’re gonna stand up for each other, we’re gonna fight…and we’re gonna win,’ he declared.

Trump has repeatedly proposed that if Canada wants to avoid the tariffs they should consider joining the United States as its ’51st state’.

White House Press Secretary was asked about the issue during her Wednesday briefing.

‘He feels strongly that it would be very beneficial for the Canadian people to be the 51st state of the United States,’ she said. ‘They wouldn’t be paying for these tariffs.

‘They’d have much lower taxes if they were part of our great country.’

Trump again talked up the power of tariffs during his address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night.

‘It’s a beautiful word, isn’t it,’ he said.
