Authorities: Armed man shot by Secret Service near White House while Trump out of town

Details are still emerging about the shooting, which happened about a block from the White House in the heart of Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Secret Service agents shot an armed man believed to be traveling from Indiana near the White House after an early Sunday confrontation, as reported by authorities.

According to a Secret Service statement, the shooting, which occurred around midnight about a block from the White House, did not result in injuries to anyone else. President Donald Trump was in Florida when the incident took place.

Local police provided the Secret Service with information about an alleged “suicidal individual” heading from Indiana. Subsequently, the man’s vehicle and a person resembling his description were located nearby.

“As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel,” the Secret Service said in a statement.

The man was hospitalized. The Secret Service said his condition was “unknown.”

The Metropolitan Police Department will investigate because the shooting involved law enforcement officers. A message left Sunday for the police department wasn’t immediately returned.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
