Crash in Lorain County highlights safety concerns at dangerous intersection

Three people are recovering after a crash at a notorious Lorain County intersection.

In Lorain County, three individuals were injured in a recent accident at the junction of State Route 57 and State Route 83. Fortunately, their injuries are not life-threatening. This intersection has been a known problem area for the community, with frequent incidents occurring there.

John Kauffelv, a resident of Grafton for his entire life, expressed his concern about the intersection. At 78 years old, he is all too familiar with the dangers it poses, having witnessed many accidents there. He highlighted the intersection’s reputation for speeding vehicles, screeching tires, and the sound of emergency sirens.

This location has a tragic history of accidents, making it a painful reminder for the local residents. According to Grafton Township Fire Chief Bob Richards, the intersection was the site of a fatal accident involving two young individuals in the past.

Richards explained that safety measures are being considered, with plans for a roundabout to be built at the intersection.

“Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) officials conducted traffic studies and determined that roundabouts are safer, as they keep traffic flowing, slow speeds, and reduce the risk of T-bone crashes,” said Ricahrds.

A similar roundabout was installed about half a mile down the road, at an intersection once considered one of Ohio’s most dangerous. Governor Mike DeWine has praised the change as a step toward improving safety.

For now, Kauffelv continues his Sunday ritual of moving his trash to the curb, undeterred by the nearby rush of traffic.
