A resident of Florida retirement community The Villages has been charged with DUI manslaughter after a woman fell out of a golf cart he was driving in the middle of the night and died from her injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol said that Richard Allen Keil, 58, swerved to avoid a parked car just before 1 a.m. on Sunday and his passenger, a 60-year-old Illinois woman — fell out and sustained serious injuries, WKMG reported.
Troopers found Keil to be impaired and arrested him.
Villages-News.com identified the victim as Kelly Novit and said she had been visiting her mother in The Villages but not why she was with Keil.
Novit was taken to a hospital in The Villages and then transfered to a trauma unit, where she died.
A Florida Highway Patrol report said Keil’s golf cart had “a cooler with four empty Michelob beer cans and a case of Michelob Ultra beer.” He reportedly told police he drank three cans of beer and was at a bar before dumping Novit out of the golf cart.
Police said he performed poorly in field sobriety tests and his breath samples registered high.
He was released on a $50,000 bond on Monday.
