SAO PAULO – The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is in the process of recovery in an intensive care unit following a surgical procedure for an intracranial hemorrhage, as confirmed by a statement from the Sirio-Libanes hospital released early on Tuesday.
The procedure was performed after the 79-year-old leftist leader felt headaches doctors believed resulted from a fall at home in October.
According to the hospital, Lula was transferred 1,000 kilometers south (620 miles) from the capital Brasilia to Sao Paulo for treatment and is currently in a stable condition under careful observation in the ICU after the successful drainage of the bleeding.
Brazil’s presidency has yet to issue any comment.
Due to the unfortunate incident, Lula had to cancel his trip to Russia for a BRICS summit. Following the surgery, he was left with a visible cut at the back of his head, just above his neck.
Sirio-Libanes said a press conference will be held at 9 a.m. local time (12 a.m. GMT) to discuss the surgery.
