It was heartbreak for North Macedonia as they failed to capitalise on their victory over Italy, with the team falling to defeat against Portugal in the final round of the 2022 World Cup playoffs. Cristiano Ronaldo was on hand to help Portugal continue their record of reaching every single international tournament finals since his own career with the national team began in 2003.

Bruno Fernandes scored twice in the 2-0 victory over North Macedonia, handing Ronaldo a chance to compete in his fifth World Cup at senior level. Now, the No.7 is looking ahead to that tournament in November and December.

Cristiano Ronaldo took to Instagram to thank fans

“Goal achieved, we’re in the Qatar World Cup,” Ronaldo posted on his Instagram page.

“We’re in our rightful place, thanks to all Portuguese for their tireless support.

“Come on Portugal.”

Ronaldo wasn’t the only senior figure present in the Portuguese team on Tuesday evening, with former Real Madrid defender Pepe also being pivotal in the team’s success.

Ronaldo himself even added a picture of the pair to his Instagram in the immediate aftermath of the match, appearing to praise their respective longevity.

“Years go by, but goals always remain the same,” he posted.
