Harvard offers free tuition to students whose families make $200K or less per year

Harvard University announced it will now offer free tuition to students whose families make $200,000 or less per year.

Harvard President Alan M. Garber emphasized the importance of making the university financially accessible to a broader range of individuals. By doing so, Harvard aims to create a more diverse and inclusive student body, exposing students to a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. This initiative is seen as a way to enhance both the intellectual and personal growth of all students at the university.

“By bringing people of outstanding promise together to learn with and from one another, we truly realize the tremendous potential of the University.”

In line with this commitment, Harvard announced that students from families earning $100,000 or less annually would now be eligible for comprehensive financial support. This support includes not only tuition fees but also covers expenses such as housing, food, and health services. The goal is to remove financial barriers and ensure that students can fully engage in their academic pursuits without worrying about economic constraints.

Additionally, students from families with incomes of more than $200,000 per year will also qualify for financial aid.

The average annual tuition for a Harvard student is $56,550, but with room, board and health services it comes out to about $83,000.

William R. Fitzsimmons, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Harvard College, stressed the importance of attracting talented students from diverse backgrounds. Harvard recognizes that students bring unique perspectives and strengths based on their socioeconomic backgrounds, geographic locations, and life experiences. The university believes that offering robust financial aid packages is crucial in attracting and retaining these exceptional students, enriching the overall learning environment at Harvard.

Harvard added that it has awarded more than $3.6 billion in undergraduate financial aid since launching the Harvard Financial Aid Initiative in 2004.
