Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid became the first international player to clinch the NBA scoring title and the first center to do so since Shaquille O’Neal in the 1999-2000 season.

Born in Cameroon, Embiid is the 2021-22 NBA scoring champion, beating the Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo by a small margin. While Embiid averaged 30.6 points per game, Antetokounmpo finished the regular season with 29.9.

Joel Embiid set some records on the way to scoring crown

LeBron James was Embiid’s closest competition at 30.3 points per game. The Los Angeles Lakers forward, however, played less than the 58 required matches to get included in the scoring title race.

Embiid also set the record for playing the fewest minutes per game by a scoring champion. The Cameroonian candidate also became the first center to average over 30 points for a season since Moses Malone did it in 1981-82 when he won MVP.
