Georgia officials requested more testing on Sunday in the case of twin brothers who were found dead together in the mountains earlier this month.
Hikers discovered the bodies of Qaadir and Naazir Lewis, both 19, at the top of Bell Mountain on March 8. Both individuals had sustained gunshot wounds, leading Towns County police to initially suggest that it was a murder-suicide, as reported by WAGA.
Despite the initial findings, a recent update from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has revealed that the cause of death for the Lewis brothers is still pending as further forensic testing is being pursued. WSB-TV noted that the agency has taken custody of the bodies to conduct autopsies for a more comprehensive examination.
Expressing skepticism about the idea of a murder-suicide scenario, the brothers’ uncle shared with the news outlet his disbelief that such an act could have been committed by the siblings, stating, “I can’t imagine them hurting each other because I’ve never even seen them get into a fistfight before.” Such sentiments raise questions and uncertainty surrounding the tragic incident.
The brothers were expected to go to Boston, Massachusetts, on March 7 but never made their flight. WAGA reported that their airline tickets were in their wallets when their bodies were found the next day.
Their family said the twins had never been in the area, which is 90 miles from home.
The investigation remains ongoing.
“How did they end up out in the mountains? They don’t hike out there, they’ve never been out there,” their aunt told WJCL. “They don’t know nothing about Hiwassee, Georgia, they never even heard of Bell Mountains — so how did they end up right there.”
