Columbus Zoo welcomes 2 penguin chicks to its colony

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced a pair of furry additions to the Shores and Aquarium habitat Wednesday — penguin chicks!

The zoo also recently announced on social media the hatching of new baby seahorses and updates on two Asian elephants.

In a Facebook post, the zoo said the two penguins hatched right after Valentine’s Day on Feb. 18 and Feb. 20.

Before visitors are allowed to see the baby penguins, the zoo has explained that the chicks need to go through what they call “penguin preschool.” During this stage, the young penguins will focus on building confidence and enhancing their physical abilities. They will be taught essential skills such as diving and swimming in deeper waters, preparing them for life within the penguin colony.

One of the newly hatched chicks is the offspring of two penguins named Big Bertha “BB” Cobblepot and Dr. Oswald Cobblepot. The second chick is the baby of Asela Bellfontaine and Professor Phineas Sprinklebottom, forming a new generation within the zoo’s penguin community.

Aside from the adorable penguin chicks, the zoo delightedly shared images of more than 70 baby seahorses that recently emerged in January and February. This event marks the first time in about two years that such a large number of seahorses have been successfully hatched at the zoo, showcasing their commitment to marine life conservation and breeding efforts.

The baby seahorses will need to grow and prepare for a larger habitat before guests can view them, the zoo said.

The zoo also announced they are expecting two baby Asian elephants in the upcoming months.

The animal care and veterinary teams are monitoring Phoebe and Sunny who are currently pregnant. Phoebe is expected to give birth to her baby in fall.
