Attorneys for Supreme Court lawyer and SCOTUSblog co-founder Tom Goldstein are pushing back against federal prosecutors alleging tax evasion and accusations of concealing millions. They are advocating for sanctions to be imposed on prosecutors for what they deem as misleading and potentially intentionally false claims made against him in court.

The legal team, led by attorney Jonathan Kravis, has filed a motion calling out the prosecutors for a pattern of deceptive statements throughout the investigation and prosecution of Goldstein. The motion also seeks the production of sworn grand jury testimony from an office manager, as part of an emergency request to compel the Justice Department to provide this crucial information.

In a recent filing supporting the emergency motion, Kravis criticized the government for its handling of the case, highlighting that the manager’s testimony contradicts the government’s public accusations against Goldstein. The manager’s testimony supposedly points in a different direction regarding Goldstein’s alleged attempts to obstruct the investigation into his purported crimes.

“In briefing on Defendant’s detention and release conditions, the Government proffered to the Court certain facts concerning Defendant’s repeated offers of cryptocurrency and other things of value to a witness who ‘was the one and only staff member … at Defendant’s law firm … familiar with the law firm’s financial records,”” the DOJ said in its opposition filing. “The witness has explained that Defendant did not suggest that the witness not assist in the investigation, and the witness cannot testify as to Defendant’s subjective intent.”
