A snorkeling boat with 13 people, including 11 Australian tourists, overturned in rough waters near Bali, leading to the tragic death of a woman and injuring two others, as reported by the police.

The incident occurred as the Sea Dragon boat was en route from a Bali port to Nusa Penida, a small island popular for its underwater sights, where it faced challenges from high waves, shared Agus Widiono, a local police spokesperson.

It was followed by a second wave that capsized the boat in Kelingking waters, Widiono said.

A nearby boat was rushed to rescue 12 survivors, including two local crews and two injured tourists from the choppy waters.

Rescuers also found the body of Maree, the spokesperson said.

Survivors were treated at nearby health clinic and are in stable condition.

During the expedition to view underwater landscapes, a massive wave struck the boat, causing a 39-year-old woman named Anna Maree to be thrown offboard, according to the authorities.

The vast archipelago country spans more than 17,000 islands with a population of 280 million, and boats are a popular and relatively cheap form of transportation.
