Carlos Sainz had pole position in his hand as was first after the first attempt of Q3, but Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc produced a scintillating final run to take first place at the Formula 1 2022 Azerbaijan GP.

Both Red Bull cars of Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen usurped Sainz on the finals runs after the Spaniard made a small mistake meaning he couldn’t improve his time.

Charles Leclerc is simply unbeatable on Saturdays this season as he bagged his sixth pole positions in eight races.

It’s also the 15th pole position of his career and gives him another chance to close in on Verstappen‘s 11-pint lead in the World Championship.

Perez, for his part has been sensational all weekend in Baku, and is a serious contender for the race win, which would be his second in a row after Monaco.

The top four drivers are a class apart from the rest of the field with fifth place man Mercedes’ George Russell 1.3s behind polesitter Leclerc.

Pierre Gasly produced a brilliant lap in Q3 to take sixth in the AlphaTauri, ahead of seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, who could only take seventh place.

Sebastian Vettel survived a crash in Q2 to take ninth in the Aston. Martin, with Fernando Alonso in 10th, though he will be expecting to move up the order in the race with his straight line speed of almost 344 km/h.
