Ferrari were dealt a huge blow in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, as both their drivers retired early from the race with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc lasting 10 and 21 laps, respectively.

The Spaniard suffered from a hydraulic issue, while Leclerc had an engine problem with smoke coming out of the back of his car.

Leclerc premiered new turbo but the new propellant could not resist. Despite being in the pole position, he was overtaken by Checo Perez and pushed to regain his position while Max Verstappen was just behind him.

Meanwhile, this is not an ideal start to the season for Sainz, who failed to collect points for the third time in 2022.

“Unfortunately #Carlos55 had a problem and stopped,” Ferrari tweeted.

In the Melbourne GP, Sainz crashed out on the opening laps and in Emilia-Romagna he was unlucky as McLaren‘s Daniel Ricciardo collided with him and sent the Spaniard into the gravel.

Despite retiring from the race, Sainz will remain fifth in the driver’s standings behind Verstappen, Leclerc, Perez and George Russell.
