Mark Carney, the Canadian Prime Minister, states that the previous close relationship with the US is no longer intact due to disputes over Trump’s tariffs.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday stated that the longstanding relationship with the United States has come to an end, expressing his intention to initiate a renegotiation of a trade deal.

Carney, aged 60, who recently won the leadership of the Liberal party with an overwhelming 86% of the vote following the resignation of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, made these remarks in Ottawa after a meeting with the provincial premiers, focusing on President Donald Trump’s imposition of new tariffs.

“It’s evident that as Canadians, we have the ability to shape our own path. We hold authority and control over our future. We possess the capability to provide for ourselves more than any external entity, the U.S. included, could potentially strip away,” he affirmed.

Trump’s tariffs and remarks about making Canada the 51st state have unsettled Canadian leaders and upset many Canadians. 

On Wednesday, Trump said that he would impose a 25% tariff on imports of foreign-made cars, a move intended to boost the U.S. auto industry. He paused the tariffs on goods covered by the USMCA.
