Following her divorce, Echo Lloyd relocates 16 miles away from her previous residence to the secluded town of Edwards, Missouri. Her daughter, Kelsey Smith, notes that Echo appreciates the peaceful surroundings and sets out to spruce up the property by planning renovations, tidying up the gardens, and contemplating paint options for the house.
During a visit to her mother’s new abode bearing gifts for Mother’s Day, Kelsey observes Echo’s absence as her car is not parked in the driveway. Undeterred, Kelsey leaves a lovely purple potted plant and a heartfelt card, urging Echo to get in touch upon receiving the gifts. However, Echo fails to reach out even after a week, prompting Kelsey to pay another visit.
Concern mounts when Echo fails to respond to repeated knocks on the doors during Kelsey’s second visit. Spotting Echo’s car now parked outside, Kelsey’s worry escalates. Despite her calls for Echo going unanswered, Kelsey takes notice of a cracked window at the back of the house and manages to slide it open sufficiently to gain entry.
Inside, Kelsey finds the home in disarray, which is unusual. Echo, who had OCD, kept everything in place. Her purse is under the nightstand with her wallet and ID inside. However, her car keys, pistol, and medications are missing. Kelsey reports her mother missing.
