A retired Detroit police sergeant shot his tenant to death Tuesday afternoon in an apparent dispute over an eviction.

According to sources, the landlord, who remains unidentified, visited the residence earlier in the day to deliver an eviction notice, as reported by WXYZ. Legal documents reveal a court dispute dating back to August, culminating in the formal eviction filing in early November.

According to the sources, the retired cop, who had a concealed carry permit, told police the tenant made threats, and he shot him multiple times when he thought he was reaching for a weapon.

The tenant, in his 40s, was unarmed.

The retired officer, in his 50s, was taken into custody and his gun recovered. No charges have been announced.

Deputy Chief Jacqueline Pritchett said the sergeant retired about eight years ago.

Police are investigating and will send the case to the prosecutor’s office for review when they’re done.
