Nicolas Resendiz: A toddler died in Houston as a cement truck crashes from an overpass onto an SUV
The toddler’s mother, grandmother, and sister were with him, and emergency workers were able to save them. However, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Friday, August 5, a 22-month-old boy died in Houston, Texas, when a concrete truck fell from an overpass and crushed the SUV he was riding in.

HOUSTON, TEXAS:

Nicolas Resendiz was with his mother, Jennifer, who is 22 years old, his grandmother, who is 54 years old, and his twin sister. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office told Newsweek that the concrete mixer truck lost control because it was raining and rolled over in Woodforest, which is in East Harris County.

According to reports, the truck was going south on Beltway 8 East when it hit the family’s car, which was going through an intersection. His grandmother was driving, and his mother and the twins were sitting in the back seat.

Witnesses helped three of the SUV’s passengers get out of the wrecked vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. But Resendiz got stuck, and no matter what they did, they couldn’t save the little boy.

Witness Raymond Romo told ABC 13 about Resendiz’s twin sister, “She was kind of pinned in, and I was reaching back, but the front seat was a little hard to get.” He added, “I started pulling on the baby’s car seat to get her out, and we were able to get her out before she was pinned in.”

The three people who managed to stay alive were taken to a hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries. Joe Tijerina, another witness who helped the family, said, “We did what we could.” He added, “Everyone had to work together to figure out if we could move the [concrete mixer]. We had an 18-wheeler try to tie a chain to it so it could be pulled away. We had a big dually four-by-four truck. I mean, it wasn’t moving at all.”

A 36-year-old woman who was not named drove the concrete truck. Before she lost control of the truck, the woman said it was because the roads were wet.

During an interview with the local press, Lieutenant Simon Cheng from the sheriff’s office confirmed that the truck driver was not drunk. He also said that there was nothing wrong with the truck that could have caused the accident.

A crash reconstruction team, the county’s Institute of Forensic Sciences, and the county’s District Attorney’s Office have all been called in to help with the investigation. Cheng said that there was no reason to file charges right now.
