For the first time in 18 years, the Pittsburgh Steelers genuinely don’t know who will be their quarterback in both the short, medium and long term following Ben Roethlisberger‘s retirement, a fierce competition among three candidates for the mythical job for this franchise that boasts an NFL-high six Super Bowls.

According to an article by Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports, after a slow start to training camp, the frontrunner to be the Steelers’ quarterback is Mitch Trubisky over Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett.

Is Mitch Trubisky the favorite to be the Steelers starting QB?

DeArdo commented that all indications, prior to the start of the preseason games, are that Trubisky is the overwhelming favorite to start the Steelers’ first regular season game next Sunday, September 11 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Officially, however, Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin continues to give similar odds to both Trubisky, Rudolph and Pickett.

“They’re making it difficult for us,” Tomlin said. “It’s tough to manage three capable guys, but they’re forcing us to do it because they’re making the necessary plays. They’re anticipating, the timing has been good, [and] the accuracy has been good.”

Trubisky, Rudolph and Pickett profiles

The challenge will be daunting, and the three options Tomlin has are very different.

Trubisky is a free agent who arrived this year from the Buffalo Bills after a disappointing stint with the Chicago Bears.

Rudolph was “Big Ben‘s” backup since arriving in Pittsburgh in the third round of the 2018 Draft.

Pickett was the first quarterback chosen in the last Draft and the only quarterback drafted in the first round, but he still has no NFL experience.

“Mitch’s silver bullet, if you will, is his fluidity and mobility. He’s a really good athlete,” Tomlin said. “Rudolph throws a really good deep ball. (Pickett) has been Steady Eddie. Kenny P, I don’t think you can get him in an environment where he gets flustered. … We saw that at Pitt and it’s it’s been the same. It doesn’t matter what drill or what environment you put him in. He’s Steady Eddy and really cool.”
