ELYRIA, Ohio — The Elyria Police Department is currently on scene in the area of Boston Avenue and South Logan Street.Â
The Elyria Police Department, in a Facebook post just before 9 a.m. on Friday, reported that various patrol and tactical units have been sent out, and officials are requesting the public to steer clear of the vicinity.
In an update posted at 9:35 a.m. Elyria police noted that the situation is contained to one residence in the 800 block of South Logan.Â
“A person who has federal probation warrants for weapon violation is currently indoors. The individual is not cooperating and is thought to be in possession of either a handgun or a rifle,” informed the Elyria police.
Officials are advising residents to shelter in place, and several nearby roads are blocked.
In addition, the U.S. Marshals are responding to the scene.Â
Brian Belmont, the Principal of Constellation Schools, mentioned to 3News that law enforcement had informed them about an incident in close proximity and instructed them to implement a lockdown at Elyria Community Middle.
In addition, Elyria City Schools posted on Facebook that as a precaution, Eastern Heights is in “lockout status,” meaning no one is allowed to enter or exit the building until they receive an all-clear from police.Â
“Please rest assured that the students are safe and continuing with their school day, and we are in close communication with law enforcement. Again, the students are securely inside the building, while the situation is taking place many blocks away from the school,” said Elyria City Schools on Facebook.Â
Elyria police noted that “although area schools may be on lockdown for safety precaution, there is no immediate danger to students or faculty members.”
