Since Steph Curry first used it during the Golden State Warriors‘ championship run this summer, the “night night” celebration has taken over the sports world.

Before Curry put the Denver Nuggets, Memphis Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics to sleep in the playoffs, other sportsmen undoubtedly performed some variation of the celebration.

But, as far as the “night night” celebration goes, it’s Curry who has made it one of the most popular gestures in sport right now.

Since the NBA Finals, the celebration has been witnessed in almost every sport. For example, WNBA player Sabrina Ionescu did it to end a game-winning shot, while Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Andrew McCutchen used it to end a home run streak.

In July, when a child really laid on the ground to celebrate, it was taken to a whole new level. Naturally, Curry was in favour.

The celebration has taken over the world of European football too. After winning the DFL-Supercup, some Bayern Munich players imitated the “night night” celebration.

Neymar then pulled off this celebration during PSG’s 5-2 win over Montpeiller in Ligue 1, while Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele did this celebration after scoring a goal against Juventus during the pre-season.

In the Premier League, Tottenham‘s Eric Dier has performed it too for a promotional shoot.

Curry has also earned the respect of the other greats of the sporting world, as Lionel Messi has swapped shirts with him and Tom Brady congratulated him on his most recent championship.

With all this in mind, Steph Curry might just be the most popular athlete in sports right now.

What is the origin of Steph Curry’s “night night” celebration?

“I was just having fun,” Curry told reporters during the Warriors‘ playoff series against Dallas when asked about the origin of the celebration.

“You talk about having kids. You know how bedtime routines are important.

“It’s the final signal for a job well done that day. Pretty special.”
