Weather Impact Alert: Flooding concerns across Northeast Ohio

Our saturated ground won’t be able to handle much more rain in the short term.

This week in Cleveland has been marked by continuous heavy rainfall, causing the ground to become waterlogged and leading to flooding in various rivers and streams in the area. Unfortunately, the forecast predicts more rain in the upcoming days, exacerbating the existing situation. Consequently, a Weather Impact Alert Day has been declared starting on Saturday and extending into early Sunday.

There is a slight chance of a temporary respite from the rain on Saturday, but another round of heavy rainfall is expected to move in later in the day, continuing through Saturday night. Additionally, temperatures are anticipated to drop significantly from the 60s to the 40s on Saturday.

Hourly Saturday

On Sunday, remnants of the weather system will linger before eventually moving eastward. The local area is likely to receive an additional 1-3 inches of rainfall, further raising concerns about flooding in rivers and streams due to the excessive water accumulation.

If you live in a flood-prone area, please have an alternate plan and prepare now. If you live next to a river, keep a close eye on the forecast. Things we can do now including checking our property for poor drainage areas or clogged drains. Check the sump pump and make sure it’s working properly–you can do this by pouring some water in it to make sure it effectively removes it. Check the gutters and drainage systems around the house. Also ensure you have good windshield wipers if you’ll be out driving.

Rain will clear by late Sunday with colder air and snow on the way next week…that’s one way to get a break from the rain!
