$250,000 in federal grants cut for Ohio LGBTQ+ historical markers

One of the markers is located in Columbus outside Summit Station, Ohio’s longest-running lesbian-owned bar.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Thousands of dollars in federal grant money for LGBTQ+ historical markers across Ohio have been cut.

The Ohio History Connection allocated $250,000 in funds to support the installation of historical markers dedicated to commemorating LGBTQ+ individuals and locations within the state.

One of the markers is located in Columbus outside The Summit Music Hall in the University District.

One of these markers pays tribute to Summit Station, which holds the distinction of being Ohio’s longest-standing lesbian bar. Unveiled in 2023, this marker celebrates the establishment’s almost four-decade legacy.

Furthermore, alongside the recognition of Summit Station’s significance, a documentary named “Free Beer Tomorrow” was produced to narrate the narrative of this cherished establishment.

The Summit Station historical marker is one of three LGBTQ+ sites to get such a designation in the state.

The other two can be found in Dayton and Cleveland.
