Assam, Mizoram Blame Each Other; CMs Try to Defuse Border Tension

Guwahati: Amid simmering tension on the Assam-Mizoram border after a violent clash between the people of the two states, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal spoke to his Mizoram counterpart Zoramthanga on Sunday. Sonowal also apprised the PMO and MHA about the situation.

During their talks, Sonowal and Zoramthanga laid emphasis on joint efforts to address the issue.

Meanwhile, a Mizoram government spokesperson said it “has intimated MHA about the transgressions committed by Assam and the Union home secretary has convened a meeting with the chief secretaries of Mizoram and Assam on Monday”.

The trouble started when a Covid-19 testing centre was set up at “Lailapur in Assam (under Cachar district) on Friday by the Mizoram officials”. An Assam government official said after the Cachar administration objected to it, “some youths (from Mizoram) came to Lailapur and attacked villagers and burnt more than 15 small shops-cum-houses”.

In its meeting on Sunday, the Mizoram Cabinet expressed regret over the Cachar and Karimganj administrations’ provocative acts of disturbing peace and harmony in the border areas of Thinghlun, Saihapui ‘V’ and Vairengte.
