A barista has divided coffee fans after unveiling his tongue-in-cheek recipe for a Vegemite latte which he insists is similar to a salted caramel creation.

The Golden Brown Coffee barista claims he was left floored after visiting the US only to find they had never heard of the beverage which he labels as an ‘Australian classic’.

‘Let’s break it down,’ he announced in a viral TikTok video as he showed off the iconic yellow and red jar.

‘You just smear some Vegemite on the bottom of the glass and pour a shot of espresso over it,’ he explained, demonstrating the method.

‘The heat from the espresso actually brings out a lot of the sweetness from the sugars in the Vegemite,’ he said.

Once the espresso shot had been poured the barista completed the drink with some hot milk.

Adding a slice of toast for dunking, as one would do with a biscuit in tea, on the side.

‘You can’t forget to dunk in your toast soldier,’ he said, scooping up froth with his slice of toast.

But his audience, which includes Australians, were divided.

Some said they love the drink.

‘It is so sad when you go overseas and they don’t have it,’ one person said, joining in on the joke.

‘The people who think this sounds crazy obviously haven’t tried salted caramel. It is a similar concept,’ another person said.

But others refused to get on board.

‘I am Australian and I have never seen it.’

‘It is just too crazy, I love Vegemite but it is a no from me,’ said another.

Some had serving suggestions of their own for the ‘iconic’ brew.

‘Use coconut milk and it tastes like a lamington,’ one woman suggested.

‘Can’t believe you forgot to dust the top in Milo though,’ criticised another.

Some joked they were upset he had shared the recipe publicly.

‘Is nothing sacred anymore? Can’t we keep Aussie secrets as Aussie secrets?,’ one woman said.

The drink appeared to be made up in an attempt to trick the audience but is actually available in some quirky cafes around the world.

A man from Canberra left a review about a Vegemite latte he found at French Bakery in Kathmandu.

‘Saw the board out the front with the above drink advertised so couldn’t go past it. Was actually pretty damn good, better than Vegemite chocolate,’ he said.

The Vegemite latte TikTok has been viewed by more than 118k people and liked 11k times.
