Daniel Ricciardo reveals the Australian Grand Prix moment that made him so angry he wanted to 'smash things' - and the hidden piece of tech that could help save his career

Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo has spoken about a piece of technology that is helping him resurrect his career – and has confessed to being absolutely furious after a huge setback at the Australian Grand Prix.

Ricciardo, 34, started his home event from 18th on the grid after a disastrous qualifying session but climbed six places to finish 12th and was pleased with his pace during his home race.

But he finished well behind teammate Yuki Tsunoda, who finished in eighth, and will do little to silence the long line of critics who believe the Aussie’s best days are behind him.

The Aussie had delivered what appeared to be a clutch final lap to advance to Q2 before stewards deleted that time because they deemed Ricciardo exceeded track limits at turn five.

The deleted lap time would have placed Ricciardo in the top 10 and been good enough for him to advance to Q2.

‘I feel like the frustration I kind of put aside for today,’ Ricciardo told Formula 1.

‘I let that go last night and I didn’t end up breaking anything. I felt like some objects were going to get smashed after qualifying, but maybe there’s a bit of calm with age, I don’t know.

Ricciardo will hope for an even better result in Japan, and has revealed an RB steering wheel feature that helps him collect information as he drives.

The ‘mark’ feature alerts the engineers to the driver’s points of interest.

‘There’s things through the race where I’ll mark. We have, let’s say a button on the wheel that I can like use as a reference to say, ‘Oh, that lap I felt something there’,’ said Ricciardo.

‘I’m not giving away secret information, but it’s just things so I remember to tell the engineers after, so there’s a few points through the race that I marked let’s say and so it’s good to get the understanding, the data gathering and all that.

‘Obviously the weekend I would have loved to have gone better, but I think we’ve just got to keep our kind of eyes on the prize.

‘It hasn’t been the best three races to start the season for sure. And especially kind of the preparation I had coming into the season, it’s definitely not where I expected to be.

‘But it’s certainly not something that we’re going to get like rattled by or anything. We’ve just got to stay on course and I’m sure we’ll find it.’
