Beer we go! Otley Runners brave sizzling mini-heatwave to go on 19-pub booze crawl as Britain bathes in temperatures hotter than Ibiza

Dedicated Brits braved a mini-heatwave to go on the famous Otley Run pub crawl today – as the country basked in temperatures hotter than Ibiza.

The UK was thought to be as hot as 26C in some areas of the country – while the Spanish island only reached a measly 19C.

On the streets of West Yorkshire, students in fancy dress descended the 19 pubs that are part of the famed bar hopping experience.

A group of men showcased their knowledge of current events by paying tribute to the newly-elected Pope Leo XIV. They dressed up as cardinals and the pontiff, all while tightly holding on to their pints.

Elsewhere, women in brightly-coloured wigs downed beers and groups of revellers enjoyed the sizzling temperatures.

Despite the soaring temperatures earlier in the day, the Met Office’s weather experts predict a drop in temperature for the evening and Sunday.

Meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said showers would likely drift in from the south on Saturday night.

On Sunday, heavy and potentially thundery showers could pour down from the heavens.

They are likely to mainly affect the West Country, South Wales and parts of the West Midlands.

Between 20mm and 30mm of rain could fall within a couple of hours, or as much as 40mm in three hours, the forecaster said.

The experts also warned of potential heavy rainfall, hail, and lightning. They described these weather phenomena as sporadic and unpredictable, typical of thunderstorms.

‘Obviously it has been a pretty dry spring so for many areas rain is needed, but because of the heavy nature of these showers, splashing onto hard surfaces, there is the potential for minor localised issues and flooding.’

Motorists have been urged to take care when driving and be aware the thunderstorms ‘could come on at very short notice’, Mr Vautrey added.

Showers are also expected in Northern Ireland and Scotland on Sunday and Monday.

The wet weather could also continue on Monday in southern and western areas of the UK, and the Met Office is monitoring for any further warnings.

From Tuesday, the high pressure will rebuild and dry conditions and sunshine will return across the country, with temperatures in the low to mid 20s.

However, partygoers in Otley may well escape the Saturday night showers as they flock into nightclubs.
