A woman offered her adopted son to her colleagues at work because she no longer wanted to be his mother. When one colleague got wind of this, the woman’s life was turned upside down.

A Reddit user took to the platform to share a story about her coworker, whom she called Mary, and her coworker’s son, whom she called Tony. The original poster (OP) explained the harrowing ordeal she had faced at the hands of Mary.

The OP shared that Mary and her husband, a reasonably religious couple, had adopted eight children and that Tony was one of them. Tony had been adopted from Ukraine as an older child, and Mary said that was easier for her and her husband.

Two years after Mary and her husband adopted Tony, the OP noticed that Mary was unhappy with her son. She had mentioned to many people that he was not the child they thought he would be. However, nobody could have expected what came next.

What Did Mary Do?

Mary asked the OP to babysit Tony a few times, and because the OP liked children, she always accepted. The OP felt Tony was happy to be at her neat and tidy home because she said Mary’s house was “disgusting.”

The OP listened as Mary talked about how much Tony loved being at her home but never thought it was more than him simply having a good time while away from home.

However, Mary then began talking about how terrible Tony was and how bad his relationship with his adopted siblings was. Mary also often talked about how she would get rid of him. The OP shared:

“She sent out a freaking mass email to everyone in our department asking if someone wanted to take her kid from her.”

Mary called the process “re-homing” and said it was okay. When the OP logged on to Facebook, she saw that Mary had posted pictures of Tony, saying they should contact her if anyone were willing to take him in.

The OP did not respond to the email or comment on the post but felt something had to be done urgently, so she phoned the police. However, the police also didn’t know what to do, so she asked for advice on Reddit.

Many people suggested she call Child Protective Services (CPS), and others said she could contact the Ukrainian Embassy so they knew where Tony was and could help him as quickly as possible.

What Happened Next?

Later, the OP updated Reddit users on what had happened between herself, Mary, and Tony. She thanked everyone who had reached out and tried to help in a myriad of ways and went on to confirm that Tony and all his adopted siblings were safe.

After speaking to the police, the OP talked to her state’s CPS, who told her that Tony’s adoption may not have been legal. The OP then emailed all the evidence she had to the person she talked to and asked to be updated on Tony’s situation.

Although the OP and her boyfriend confirmed they would take Tony in temporarily, authorities told her that would likely be impossible. At 2 a.m. the following day, the cops finally updated the OP.

The cop confirmed that CPS had arrived at the home shortly after he had to perform the wellness check. He implied that Mary had planned to meet with someone the next day to take Tony.

The OP also discovered that the CPS worker’s suspicions had been confirmed and that Tony’s adoption was not legal. When the authorities entered Mary’s home, they found all the children in a precarious situation, and they were all taken from her and her husband.

Mary was then fired from work, and whether or not she would be allowed to claim unemployment was unclear at the time of posting. The OP thanked everyone again for their help and well wishes for Tony and said:

“What the future holds for Tony and the other kids (especially because Tony’s adoption was apparently illegal) makes me sick…but I’m going to wish for the best.”

Unfortunately, Tony’s is not the only story of a Ukrainian child being given up after adoption. One young girl experienced the same thing with her adoptive mother. Read the full story here.
